Why Don't Writers Read?

We write and write and write yet how often do we share our writings? How often do we have to make sure it has been edited into perfection before sharing a piece of work? How often do the words just remain on the page and never brought to life in a performative aspect? We would like to shake things up.  Have writers share incomplete work, present it in a public space and read work that was not necessarily intended for performance. Come to hear the spoken word. Engage and interact with the writers, find out the stories behind their pieces, give your own perspective on work in progress. A night of literary passion.

Take the L: Colab Preview in the Park

UnionDocs is beyond excited to share a sneak peek of short documentaries made by artists in the 2019 UnionDocs Collaborative Studio at our annual Preview in the Park. Join us under open skies, down by the riverside and with the expanse of the Williamsburg Bridge as a backdrop, to experience a new collaborative project, cheekily called Take the L.

Frustrations are peaking with the aging infrastructure that we rely on everyday. As systems lag and wait times climb, as climate change threatens further damage and forces decisive action, as corporate interests move to privatize transit and open lanes exclusive to the elite, it is obvious that major public investments are urgently required to preserve and improve. In the great rebuild to come, who will be asked to sacrifice and what priorities will be privileged? Will there be winners and losers? Or will we all gain?

The short documentaries in this program were developed by ten film and audio makers over ten months in response to this shared context. Starting in the throes of an impending shutdown, and now amidst an epic slowdown, the L train drama offered a jumping off point for the artists in this year’s UnionDocs Collaborative Studio to seek important stories, hidden poetics, and critical experiences. The works they produced challenge us to recognize fragilities, gaps and cracking within the dizzied and constant churn of civic circulation; to see transit as both a race to get ahead and a coordinated movement in unison, an expression of personal rhythms, routines and rituals as well as of social patterns of neglect and injustice; to notice the psychological and spiritual labor of public service and those who can be lost in the shuffle; to ask how intimate underground space acts on the subconscious and if we can rebuild from ruin to find connections.

Free and open to the public, we’ll be set up at Domino Park all evening with freshly popped popcorn and new short docs that are sure to move you. The screening will start at sundown and we’ll host a celebratory party at UnionDocs (322 Union Ave) to follow from midnight ‘til late. Ricky will be DJing and spinning from 12:30-2:30 for late night dancing. Our backyard will be open and we’ll have drinks on hand to keep the party going.

Dance Party to Support Asylum Seekers

Outdoor Brooklyn summer dance party with live DJ lineup to benefit housing asylum seekers in a private home in NYC. Dance the night away and put your money where your heart is with the best outdoor Brooklyn Summer dance party yet. DJ Class Traitor, DJ HD, DJ O, and DJ suggested D will be spinning tracks until 1am. Dress to dance, and note that the dance floor is outdoors and will be wood chips or astroturf.

We are all reading about migration in the news everyday -- how Trump is increasing hurdles for refugees and asylum seekers, and threatening to flood sanctuary cities like NYC to discourage support. Here is a concrete way you can choose to be part of a dignified response: all proceeds from this dance party go toward offering a room in a cooperative home as a temporary place for a family or individual to stay while they await judgement on their asylum application, covering rent, utilities, food, furnishings, and incidentals. Madame Lynch

The Drunkard's Wife is the company that runs Uncanny Valley. We haven't had shows at Uncanny Valley lately because we've been working on Madame Lynch.

A spectacle with music, Madame Lynch takes on the picaresque story of Eliza Lynch, a 19th century woman whose fortunes took her from Irish potato famine refugee, to French courtesan, to the self-proclaimed Empress of Paraguay. In collaboration with the Paraguayan folkloric dance group Ballet Panambí Vera, the Drunkard's Wife creates a multifaceted portrait of La Lynch as a way to understand the complex dynamics of cultural imperialism. The show reaches peaks of beauty and horror as it proceeds by way of live music, dance, and real and imagined scenes from her life as an adventuress, cultural doyenne, femme fatale and microfinance pioneer.

Featuring: Juliana Francis Kelly, Hannah Kallenbach, Nikki Calonge, Blaze Ferrer, Braulio Cruz, Mieko Gavia, Kevin Green and the dancers of Ballet Panambí Vera. Live band directed by Rachel Swaner, featuring Lisa Clair, Lorena, Sana Nagano, Max Maples, Rachel Meirs, and Frederik Haake.

Sounds of Tea: A Binaural Sound Tea Ritual

Someone said that music is the silence between the notes. We amplify the silence between the sounds (using binaural microphones and silent disco headphones) to help us slow down and find the stillness within. This is a practice of welcoming the small, the subtle, the slow, the quiet, the unnoticed.

Three teas will be served (Gyokuro from Japan, Silver Needle from China, and Himalayan Farm Black Tea from Nepal) as we attend to the sounds of tea (clinking of cups, boiling of water, pouring of tea, etc.) The intimacy of presence is essential for this event, so there are no more than six participants per sitting. Please arrive 15 minutes before your session, so we may start promptly.

Transmissions

Readings, music, and book launch, with Tatiana Istomina, Susan Kuo, Laura Henriksen, and Amanda Nedham. Moderated by Miriam Atkin. The night will consist of four acts of aesthetic conjury.

Two of the artists will invoke historical events of femicide. Tatiana Istomina will share her conceptual artist's book (just released by Pinsapo and available to buy at the event), which recreates a memoir by Hélène Rytman, wife of French philosopher Louis Althusser, whom he strangled to death in 1980. Amanda Nedham will read from a project about Dian Fossey, the primatologist who was found brutally murdered in her bed in 1985. Weaving text with visual materials to transmit the experiences of these women, Amanda and Tatiana reanimate two figures whose formidable minds were wiped out in acts of murderous violence.

We'll also hear from Laura Henriksen, whose poems investigate the binary between life and death, experimenting with its porousness. And Susan Kuo, avant-garde vocalist and pianist, who will play with the phantom qualities of liminal soundscapes. The show will be two hours long, with the first half consisting of performances and the second half devoted to a free-form discussion between all four participants about art, violence, death and reanimation.

This event is organized by Pinsapo, a web of tightly or loosely connected people living here and abroad who configure themselves in different ways at different times to help with the creation and publicization of homeless art works. This event is funded in part by Poets and Writers with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts.

Grub

Grub is a free and open community dinner with a history of bringing together people from all over the city. There will be plates for vegans and vegetarians alike. About 99 percent of the food we share is freegan, which means it is excess, ripe, nearly ripe, or slightly damaged food that has been recovered from the waste of grocery stores.

Most importantly Grub is about building a stronger and more supportive community, so feel free to come early and hang out. We need help gathering, cooking and preparing food for Grub (culinary skill not necessarily required). Volunteers are welcome to bring vegetarian (freegan and vegan is preferred) food and make their own dishes or show up as early. We plan to be able to serve approximately 50 people, so it’s first come first serve. And as we’re sure you always already do, please go out of your way to talk to strangers and to welcome new people. That’s why we’re here.

Song Squad of New York

Song Squad teaches New Yorkers how to sing Pride songs at the Footlight. So, what is this all about? Song Squad is an informal chorus with a live backup band. At each unique event, Song Squad’s choir director, Uton Onyejekwe, helps participants make two previously-announced songs performance-ready. After an hour of arranging harmonies, correcting vocal phrasings, and making other improvements to the first song, Song Squad’s video crew shoots a live performance for a future online release. The process is repeated for the second song.

Throughout June, Song Squad will be commemorating the 50th anniversary of Stonewall, a key event in America's LGBTQ civil rights movement. Drag queen Charmagne Aültra will dazzle as the guest host for these shows. There are no auditions for Song Squad and anyone who enjoys singing is encouraged to participate. All skill levels are welcomed and prior choir experience or preparation for each event are not requirements.
