This Party Is Killing You

Adventure[s] kicks off World Pride weekend with a special edition of their signature event, This Party Is Killing You (AKA the Robyn Party). The night will feature performances from drag diva Vanna Deux, who will be performing some sickening moves to Robyn faves. Arrive before midnight to catch the realness. There will also be a giant secret special guest performer -- you won’t want to Hideaway from this.

Plus, DJ sets will also highlight danceable beats from other queer music icons: Robyn (duh), Janelle Monae, Madonna, Lizzo, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Betty Who with some Scissor Sisters, RuPaul, Prince, Bowie and Big Freedia thrown in for good measure.

Since its inception in 2011, This Party Is Killing You has become known as the most queer-friendly party that isn't *officially* a queer party -- essentially, encouraging all to call their girlfriend/boyfriend/non-binary-friend because everyone needs to dance to Robyn.

Peculiar Works Project presents:

Afterparty: The Rothko Studio

A site-specific immersive performance in and around the former studio of legendary painter Mark Rothko. Built in 1884 for the YMCA as the Young Men’s Institute, 222 Bowery is renowned for the many now-famous artists who lived, worked, and played in this landmarked gem. Afterparty will explore downtown artists, peeling back their stories to reveal multiple layers of NYC history before the former studio is converted into commercial space later this summer.

Lured by cheap rents and vast lofts, artists began populating the Bowery in the late 1950s. By 1965, there were over one hundred painters living along the Bowery, among them Cy Twombly, Robert Indiana, Al Loving, and Elizabeth Murray. While the lofts themselves remained the primary attraction, with each new artist’s arrival, a second draw emerged: a growing artistic community. This unplanned, creative network impacted hundreds of artists, accelerating the exchange of ideas, generating systems for sharing resources, and staving off the isolation and self-doubt of a studio practice.

The building’s former gymnasium is significant for having been Rothko’s studio, where he painted the infamous Seagram Murals commissioned by the Four Seasons Restaurant in 1957. Peculiar Works Project’s creative team is designing an intimate, promenade journey through the historic architecture and artistic legacy of the building. Along the way, multi-disciplinary performances will reinterpret the legendary art parties attended by artworld luminaries -- Jasper Johns, John Giorno, William S. Burroughs, Eve Hesse, Jonas Mekas, Roy Lichtenstein, LeRoi Jones, Diane DiPrima, Sol LeWitt, and Andy Warhol -- against the backdrop of Rothko’s struggle between achieving success and selling out. Audiences and performers will sit around a table together in the paint-splattered space and experience a theatrical conjuring of artistic ghosts whose impact echoes till this day.

Afterparty: The Rothko Studio is directed by Ralph Lewis, choreographed by Rachel Cohen, composed by Maria Dessena, adapted by Barry Rowell, story by S.M. Dale, concept by Kim Depole & Catherine Porter, creative consultant Barbara Pitts McAdams. The cast features Toby Billowitz, Glen Feinstein, Aidan Feldman, Jason Howard, Irina Kaplan, Nathan Keiller, Caiti Lattimer, Catherine Porter, Isabella Schiller, Despina Stamos, and Jenna Zhu.

Be a Doll: An Electroacoustic Toy Opera by Alexa Dexa

Composed for solo vocalist performing choreographed play routines on musical and nonmusical toys with live and pre-programmed electronics in MaxMSP. Be a Doll follows a woman struggling with perfectionist and submissive conditioning in a world that commands her to be a doll so vigorously that she is unable to determine whether she is actually a woman or a doll. Living in a dollhouse filled with toy versions of household items, she performs gender appropriate play routines in a cycle of adulthood mimicking childhood games that mimic adulthood. As each of her toys sound out, they are electronically manipulated and played back in repetitions that mirror the truth that what we give attention to grows.

DOPEntadecacostaCOMICS

What happens if we bring together over 50 comedians together in one house, across two floors and a big backyard? DOPEntadecacostaCOMICS happens. It's funny, but it's not a joke.

Completely self-organized, no club nonsense, with dozens and dozens of the best comedians in NYC performing throughout the home of the beautiful Unruly Collective. This has never been tried, but it's happening. Two indoor "stages," and one incredible backyard in Bushwick.

When we say comedy... understand that we mean the full breadth of the art. We understand and recognize the cultural significance of comedy as a reflection of society and wanted to get a ton of folks in the room that all are passionate about the craft. You've never seen a comedy show this diverse, this obsessed with actually amplifying the full range of society. We seek to breach cultural bubbles and bring folks together that normally would never meet each other... what better than a comedy festival. Organized by Brooklyn Wildlife, Artery, Kamoflage, Smokes n Jokes, and Sam Morrison.

Klenengan: A Singular Experience of Javanese Music

Gamelan Kusuma Laras presents an evening of Javanese music for the public in the klenengan format -- an emblematic type of performance in Java where gamelan concerts on a stage are rare. Klenengan are musical events featuring musicians who gather for a kind of Javanese jam session often arranged by a family for a special event, and which typically go until late at night. Audience members are intimately involved in what is a lively musical and social event; all participants are seated at the same level, in a conspicuous demonstration of mutual exchange and egalitarianism. Guests are invited to come and go as they wish, move around the space, quietly chat with other audience members, enjoy Indonesian snacks, and immerse themselves in a transporting evening of music that draws deeply from the classical repertoire.
