Drinking Beer at the End of the World: A Booze Cruise in the Anthroposcene Shane Farrell

In the Bloody Latte Ian Svenonius figures our beverage consumption as a type of colonialist bloodsucking. Vodka comes to represent the United States’ victory over Russia in the cold war, and, even further, the totalizing power of capitalism. Coffee represents colonial dominion over Africa. In this manner we drink the blood of our enemies. My project Drinking Beer at the End of the World is somewhere between a Situationist derive (Debord, an infamous drunk who oft bemoaned the homogenizing effect of capital on local styles of drink, once remarked, “I have written much less than most people who write; but I have drunk much more than most people who drink”), a Speed Levitch tour (or cruise) of NYC, and the recently popular beer run events in which health conscious imbibers sprint from bar to bar to guzzle pints. But wait, you’re saying, beer isn’t food! Wrong! Just ask the monks of Paulner, who developed the doppelbock in the 1600s as a liquid bread on which they susta

ined themselves for the 40 days of lent. Or perhaps ask your average English field laborer circa 1400 or so, for whom a glass of ale was a critical source of calories at both breakfast and lunch (until coffee, with cream and sugar for calories, became widely available, radically transforming the productive capacity of the workforce).

OK, but what does beer have to do with sports? Well I’m sorry but if you really have to ask that question you must be quite dense. Beer and sports of course go hand in hand. Many a television screen has been destroyed by a half empty Labatt Blue can haphazardly chucked by an intoxicated and long-suffering Buffalo Bills fan. Americans even go so far as to make drinking a competitive sport unto itself, the grand prize being a case of cirrhosis (a tendency that has been particularly amplified by social media, see accounts such as: ]at]officialusadrinkingteam on instagram). OK OK, but what is this piece exactly? Well it's simply a kind of marathon performance lecture and beer tour through New York City, hosted by Death (played by yours truly). Participants will start out jogging to their first destination and are encouraged to dress in athletic wear. We will bounce from brewery to bar, sampling local styles and probably slowing to a stroll as the day wears on, discussing topics

from the role of craft beer in gentrifying neighborhoods and re-invigorating disused industrial spaces to how climate change threatens to destroy the art of lambic brewing. Along the way we might find ourselves playing surreal versions of classic pub games, or seeing who can kick a proper field goal after a pint or two. I’m hoping to rope in friends from the beer and art worlds to help me along the way (and give me a chance to catch my breath). The event will, of course, be designed to discourage intemperance and be safe and fun for anyone of drinking age. Teetotalers are begrudgingly welcome.

Collector's Night

We are thrilled to announce our 14th edition of Collector's Night. Presented in collaboration with Atlas Obscura and held for the first time at The Bell House in Gowanus, our collection of collectors will be bigger than ever before.

We are especially pleased to announce our featured presenter, Laetitia Barbier of the Morbid Anatomy Museum. To celebrate Bastille Day, French-born Laetitia Barbier will show some guillotine models from her personal collection. She'll explain how, as a very young child, a complete misunderstanding of the infamous machine's purpose led her to a life-long fascination and discuss the horror and titillation the guillotine inspired throughout the 19th century.

Plus, we'll have our annual eccentric variety of fantastic treasures on view! Have your future predicted with a vintage decision-making machine! See bottles filled with works of art, and other bottles filled with assorted objects from around the world! Paintings, postcards, packaging, and propellers! And you'll have a chance to make an action figure with the Art Neighborhood's Lisa Ludwig.

Peruse these photos of Collectors' Nights past: Small collections of large things. Large collections of small things. Commonplace items with a singular theme. Vintage, obscure, and ephemeral. Precisely laid out vitrines or piles of whatsits. You'll see it all.

An Evening With Juan Wauters

Spectacle is pleased to invite French-Uruguayan musician and filmmaker Juan Wauters to the space for a one-night-only screening of recent short-form video works. Romane, Juin 2016 builds a video portrait of the titular Romane, a 19-year-old postal service worker, living in a small village in France as she goes through her daily chores. Bolero, Uruguay is a montage of images collected in Wauters' homeland set to the tune of Maurice Ravel's classic Bolero. Both videos portray life at its own pace; driven by curiosity, Wauters' camera stares at people living their lives. Having spent years in Jackson Heights, quotidian observation of people in their day-to-day environments has become central to Wauters's life and artistic practice. This will be the first public screening of Wauters’ short films (plus a few extra surprises) in New York City, and Wauters will be in attendance for a discussion following the films. Stand Up at Haven Cycles

On June 24th, 2019 local bike messenger Robyn Hightman was struck and killed on 23rd and 6th Ave in NYC. In 2019 alone there have been 14 cycling deaths in NYC. Rather than take proactive measures to help curb these incidents, the city has chosen to turn a blind eye to cyclists by punitively ticketing them for petty infractions, ignoring the acts of murder/violence that motorists perpetrate on them, all while Mayor Bill De Blasio runs for president, where he is comfortably polling at 0 percent.

With that in mind, it is up to cyclists and allies of those who stand with us to work together in solidarity and act as an engine of change that will actually benefit us. On July 17, Haven Cycles in Bushwick will be putting on a benefit stand up comedy show with the proceeds going to the Bike Messenger Emergency Fund. While nothing can truly mend the feeling of loss one experiences when a colleague dies, we hope this night can help future cyclists around the world if they are ever injured doing the only job that doesn’t suck. Featuring stand up by Jake Flores, Ian Fidance, and Danny Felts.

Cartoon Carnival No. 81: Good Eats

In conjunction with Club Sourdough and High Steaks Media, it's time to sit back and relax for another hefty batch of 16mm (no digital) animated cartoons from the 1910s to the 1940s, straight from the Stathes Archives to a special new silver screen in Williamsburg.

Cartoon Carnival no. 81 caters to the foodies in our lives, and we've cooked up a special program of archival animated shorts that center around the trials and tribulations of food prep and eating. With early cartoonal obscurities and favorite superstar character favorites alike acting as chefs, our evening of culinary adventures range from little Bobby Bumps baking dog biscuits for Fido way back in 1917, to Dinky Doodle running a restaurant in 1925, followed by Koko the Clown ruining a Thanksgiving feast that same year, on to a depression-era Pastrytown wedding, to Krazy Kat scrounging for eats at a 1930s automat, and even Gumby experiencing a very bizarre baking lesson in 1956. Bring all your foodie friends and your appetites out for this rare opportunity to enjoy these classic and now-uncommon cartoons the way they were meant to be seen -- projected for 'reel' on actual film. Our program also features live ragtime piano by Charlie Judkins as accompaniment for select silent

-era shorts.

Treats both of the edible and drinkable variety will be available for purchase before the show and during intermission. Should you wish to learn more about the ways in which the menu intersects with the evening's programming, High Steaks will have you covered with a zine of archival research about the culinary context of each era covered, and a special gift of a one-of-a-kind piece of mid-century culinary ephemera, all waiting for you at your seat.

The Pine Barrens: Screening and Performance

Fire. Darkness. Myth. The Pine Barrens is at once a remote, inhospitable forest, and a thriving ecosystem – home to rare wildlife, veiled in Piney and Lenape folklore, and paradoxically nested within the nation's most densely populated state: New Jersey. On July 19, the award-winning documentary film named for the 1.1 million acre nature preserve will premier in New York City with a live score by the Ruins of Friendship Orchestra, an ensemble of traditional and electronic musicians. Rooftop Films brings the immersive film and performance to Brooklyn's historic Green-wood Cemetery for their 23rd annual Summer Series. Special guest, shadow puppeteer and paper-cut artist, Erik Ruin will perform a slection of “crankies,” and an afterparty will follow.

Pew Arts and Heritage Fellow, artist and director David Scott Kessler conceived the Pine Barrens out of a fascination with the influence of place on American identity. Originally a painter, his work moved into animation and film experimentation, gradually taking on the methods of creative nonfiction. Conceiving the documentary through a painterly process, Kessler envisions the Pine Barrens as an epic tone-poem: both an intimate portrait of a living landscape, and an exploration of the symbiotic and destructive relationship between humanity and nature. Following several individuals for years at a time, the work draws out themes of American survivalism, defiance in the face of environmental and political change, and the gradual loss of a way of life.

In late 2011, Kessler began exhibiting evolving iterations of the Pine Barrens project with screenings and installations, with musical performances by the Ruins of Friendship Orchestra. The group is named for the remains of the once thriving New Jersey ghost town of Friendship where the group first assembled. This group of longtime friends composes a semi-improvisational score for the film that transmutes the energy of the forest, making the documentary an unfixed and ever-evolving work.
