It’s Not What You Think: Holdtight

Nancy Manocherian’s the Cell presents, Holdtight’s latest work-in-progress showing, It’s Not What You Think. Inspired by the Cell’s artist-in-residence, Mikel Glass', exhibition, It’s Not What You Think, asks the audience to question how they consume art, and in doing so, pushes the viewer to reconsider their initial impressions to not only see, but feel what lies beneath the surface. Holdtight is an experimental dance theater company founded in 2016 by Gwendolyn Gussman that uses a multi-disciplinary approach to creating, teaching, and performing experiential and dynamic contemporary art. Holdtight productions have psychologically driven processes that, in performance, blend the narrative with abstract and lean into paradox of the human condition. With Gwendolyn Gussman, Nico Gonzales, Mara Driscoll, and Emily Haughton.

Female Joker

Female Joker. A four-hour emotional journey into a theatrical production as Jadda the Clown transforms into multiple characters. She transforms her face and costume as part of the act, altering states between human and a living sculpture. She uses simple tools such as paint, glitter, silly string, makeup, plastic wrap, balloons, paper, and collaged imagery, and turns herself into intense sculptural creations that live breathe as art. She makes puppets and toys as her backup villains. There is nothing like what Jadda is doing in NY as she takes performance art into a deep trance like level as if you’re watching a very vivid dream.

The Joker has always been a male role, but it’s time for a female to take the part. This is the Joker in 4D staring at you and changing your perspective on theater, performance, and live art. Don’t worry, Jadda’s Joker isn’t about mental health or the crisis of America. Or is it? This is fun night in a chair staring at wonderful transformative art.

Jadda works side by side with her partner Michael Alan. They bring you back to a time period in NY when art was raw, mom and pop, and down a side street. Art in America has changed. This is a refreshing non-snobby view into grassroots do-it-yourself creative freedom. Watch at home from your tele, share it with your children, or come over to their wacky studio and make a new friend. Wake up the next day with a tarantula in your pocket.

If you’re tired of fancy art ass kissing this would be for you. If you’re looking for a posh experience then this is not for you. This is an authentic experience. Help keep NYC punk going. Feel free to donate as we are not sponsored, represented, and we run only by ourselves and Pirate the Cat but she requires special treats. Meow.

Fale University has been shitting upon academia ever since 2016, when two overly educated comedians Brittany Carney and Naomi Karavani decided to put their degrees and their comedic powers together to create one stupid show. Rub

Now wave and graphic activism. Rub moves between two axes: the DIY strategies of the now-wave and graphic activism. The now-wave houses artists who produce counterculture that challenges the boundaries of Nationhood, and address issues that cross-cultural boundaries. This movement wrestles with the notion of collective vs individual identities, and uses a praxis of art and activism that moves beyond the white box. The second axis is experimentation and reinvention through graphic activism. The Rub exhibition centers pieces with a special sensitivity for printed matter and publishing as practice, that makes visible under-represented and under-appreciated identities. Themes that are included are: the experience of POC and QPOC; therapeutic art practices that deal with abuse, depression, and trauma; using graphic languages in the processes of resistance; and always returning to the personal as political. RUB features a selection of multidisciplinary practitioners and artists who

use these two axes as raw materials.

The Space Between Us

The space between us is not an empty one, but a place of transmission, airwaves constantly reverberating.

In this exhibition, the immense potential of airwaves will be explored, particularly in their capacity to convey a boundless range of messages and meanings. Love and care move the same as hate and violence, expressed in motions of the eyes, lips or tongue.

Communication can be a vehicle for connection or isolation, community or hostility. This range of messages is infinitely affecting and determined entirely by the choices of individual actors; ultimately, we make the space between us.

Cartoon Carnival No. 85: Felix at 100

It's time to sit back and relax for another batch of archival 16mm (no digital) animated cartoons from the 1920s to the 1930s, straight from the Stathes Archives to that secret silver screen in Bushwick.

Come on out for a once-in-a-lifetime special event: Felix the Cat's 100th birthday. Almost immediately following the funny feline's November 1919 debut, Felix would soon become arguably the first animated cartoon to achieve worldwide superstardom. Whether it was Felix's cute, sleek, design, or his well-developed and emotive personality, or the variety of relatable (and fantastic!) adventures within which he often found himself, some or all of these qualities have made him one of the most beloved and respected characters in animation history. Our 85th Cartoon Carnival pays homage to Felix with a variety of his rare original 1920s animated adventures, aided by a couple of sound and color 1930s appearances. To help balance out the program and to demonstrate the character's influence on his contemporaries, a few selections from other series -- such as Krazy Kat and Julius the Cat -- will be included in the lineup. Whether you're an animation history enthusiast or simply a cat lov
