The Children's Cinema

This afternoon, as an homage to both Cinema 16 and the adventurous, underestimated sensibilities of little cineastes, Light Industry will recreate the inaugural program of the Children’s Cinema, which originally screened on February 16, 1958 to a sold-out audience at the Beekman Theatre in Manhattan. In the varied selection one encounters Cinema 16’s ongoing commitment to experimental and documentary cinema, but here calibrated especially for pint-sized audiences: Len Lye’s vibrantly polychromatic animation Rainbow Dance; Lotte Reiniger’s The Grasshopper and the Ant, which recounts Aesop’s fable through intricate cut-out silhouettes; the Eames Office’s puppet film Parade; and Shirley Clarke’s early study of public amusements, In Paris Parks. The program rounds out with The Balloonatic, Buster Keaton’s aeronautical caper, reportedly a big hit with the Beekman crowd.

My Dentist's Son

There are stories in our lives that don't exactly fit. Magical occurrences that challenge our notion of reality, synchronicities nearly impossible to fathom, and otherworldly experiences that defy the boundaries of what we think is possible. Our narratives of life have little room for these anecdotes, regardless of their beauty or significance.

Our hope is to create a sacred space where we can collectively revel in these tales of magic and wonder, and to engender a more beautiful world where these occurrences are met with awe and respect. And to drink beer. My Dentist's Son is a place for stories that don't fit. Come share your tales of magic and miracle.

Animal Farm

Adapted by Brandon Walker from the novel by George Orwell. The animals on a farm drive out their master and take over and run the farm for themselves. The experiment is successful, except that someone has to take the deposed farmer's place. Leadership devolves upon the pigs, which are cleverer than the rest of the animals. Unfortunately, their character is not equal to their intelligence. This dramatization remains faithful to the book's plot and intent and retains both its affection for the animals and the incisiveness of its message.

This play is being performed by an ensemble of just four actors, which results in a fast-paced, tightly drawn interpretation of this timely story.

Cast/Creative Team for ANIMAL FARM: Starring Laura Clare Browne, Erin Cronican, William Ketter, and Brandon Walker. Directed by Erin Cronican and Brandon Walker. Sound Design by Brandon Walker. Costume Design by Erin Cronican.

Things are getting steamy in Queens this Valentine’s Day, as Soft Core returns to QED Astoria with a screening of yet another awesomely bad soft-core adult film, while New York City’s quickest comedians riff over it Mystery Science Theater 3000-style.

Comedians Jenn Wehrung and Chris Gersbeck host. You can watch a promo video to get an idea of how the show goes here.

Don’t worry, the sex scenes aren’t explicit, and even then, the scenes are edited down so we can focus on what’s really important: the story. Featuring live riffing by Jenn Wehrung, Charles McBee, Matt Fishman, Wendi Starling, and Chris Gersbeck.
